Cannabis Oil for Lung Cancer

Cannabis Oil for Lung Cancer

According to statistics from the World health organization, Lung cancer is the second most common type of cancer in the United States and the world. It is estimated that each year, more than 225,000 are diagnosed of lung cancer. It is typically treated with chemotherapy and other targeted therapies but newer research is examining whether cannabis or marijuana oil could be used in the treatment of lung cancer. Several clinical trials suggest cannabis oil may help stop cancer growth. It should be noted that cannabis oil is already being used to manage cancer symptoms and the side effects of cancer treatments. This article  talks about what cannabis oil can and can’t do when it comes to lung cancer

Are all cannabis oils the same?

Before looking at the specific benefits of cannabis oil, let’s try to understand the different types of cannabis oil that are available for consumption. Cannabisor marijuana and hemp plants are composed of different cannabinoids which consist of chemical components that have some effect on the body when consumed. The two most common cannabinoids are THC and CBD. Most extract, oils, and marijuana products today contain some ratio of THC and CBD. It should be noted that THC has psychoactive characteristics and is the one that produces the “high” most people associate with marijuana while CBD, on the other hand, is typically used for therapeutic or medical purposes.

The main and common types of cannabis oil include:

  • CBD oil which is a nonpsychoactive marijuana product and It doesn’t contain THC, so it won’t produce a “high.” CBD oil is preferred for its therapeutic effects, such as easing anxiety, pain, and side effects of chemotherapy.
  • Hemp-derived oil.It  is very similar to the marijuana plant, but it doesn’t have any THC. It can contain CBD, but of inferior quality.
  • Marijuana-derived oil.  This is Cannabis oil extracted from the same plant as dried marijuana leaves and buds but differs in that it has a higher ratio of THC thus has psychoactive effects.
  • Rick Simpson oil (RSO). RSO contains high levels of THC with little or no CBD.

When choosing a cannabis oil, it is always advisable to carefully look at the label so as to know THC to CBD ratio  you’re getting.

Can cannabis oil cure cancer?

Scientist have not given a definitive answer, but they’ve found some promising evidence over that last few decades. A clinical study 1975 Source reported that THC and another cannabinoid called cannabinol (CBN) slowed the growth of lung cancer in mice. Another recent study in performed in cells   2014 revealed that that THC and CBD may help prime cancer cells to respond better to radiation therapy. Also a 2019 study reported  about a man who had lung cancer and declined conventional cancer treatment in favor of using CBD oil and after using cannabis oil his tumor appeared to respond to this alternative treatment. Still, other clinical trials  suggests cannabinoids may have a positive  impact on cancer. In a study carried out in  2004, THC actually reduced  how quickly certain lung and brain cancer cells grew.

The take home message

So far, there’s not enough scientific evidence to concretely say whether cannabis oil has the potential to cure cancer. However long-term studies in humans are needed to determine whether it works and, if it does, how to use it safely and effectively but not withstanding it will not be a bad idea trying it if other conventional medications have failed.
